Manages the evaluation of data to understand premium, claim, exposure, and population. Guiding team to identify and resolve data insights/irregularities. Leading the creation/use/documentation of models, tools, and assumptions that support business strategy analysis and risk management. Guides team to develop and implement quality and process improvement efforts. Guides team to work in support of department initiatives, program, and enterprise goals. Represents Underwriting in cross-functional leadership venues. Supports the rate setting process. Plans account risk assessment. Leverages advanced knowledge of the external business environment. Coaches team to present renewal recommendations to clients/organization. Ensures internal collaboration to develop case/investment strategies. Oversees the development of rates and account plans that mitigate risk. Manages and guides rate negotiations with external parties. Enables team to help customers understand underwriting approach. Overseeing addressing of data needs and requests. Enables team and own ability to build relationships and influence outcomes with customers and channel partners. Manages work with internal partners to bring financial solutions to customers. Coordinates peer review process. Maintains compliance with and influences relevant policies, guidelines, and procedures, ensuring staff maintain compliance.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provides developmental opportunities for others; builds collaborative, cross-functional relationships. Pursues professional growth; develops and provides training and development to talent for growth opportunities; supports execution of performance management guidelines and expectations. Leads, adapts, implements, and stays up to date with organizational change, challenges, feedback, best practices, processes, and industry trends. Fosters open dialogue amongst team members, engages, motivates, and promotes collaboration within and across teams. Delegates tasks and decisions as appropriate; provides appropriate support, guidance, and scope; encourages development and consideration of options in decision making.
  • Manages designated work unit or team by translating business plans into tactical action items; oversees the completion of work assignments and identifies opportunities for improvement; ensures all policies and procedures are followed. Aligns team efforts; builds accountability for and measuring progress in achieving results; determines and ensures processes and methodologies are implemented; resolves escalated issues as appropriate; sets standards and measures progress. Fosters the development of work plans to meet business priorities and deadlines; obtains and distributes resources. Removes obstacles that impact performance; identifies and addresses improvement opportunities; guides performance and develops contingency plans accordingly; influences teams to execute in alignment with operational objectives.
  • Ensures accurate analysis and reporting on data by: managingthe evaluation of highly complex data to understand premium, claim, exposure, and inform understanding of population risk; applyingexpert knowledgeto guide team to evaluate credibility, utilization, and risk based on population size and prior predictive behavior of the pool/account; guiding their team to identify and resolveactionable insights and data irregularities; leading the creation anduse of complex models (e.g., rate models and benefit pricing tools) and data analytics tools that support the analysis of business strategy and financial/underwriting risk management; and ensuring the application of documentation strategies to capture models, tools, assumptions, and data elements as necessary.
  • Manages case and underwriting work by: providing expert guidance on the processing ofrenewal activities (e.g., running reports, re-quotes, investments, sold rates) for customers and/or book of business and encouraging team to guide others; overseeing collaboration with internal departments and the development of rates that appropriately mitigate risk for the organization and optimize sustainable membership growth; providing expert guidance on the development and execution of complex account plans that address threats and opportunities to ensure attainment of goals in collaboration with Sales and Account Management; managing and providing guidance as needed on rate negotiations with external parties (e.g., brokers, consultants, and customers), leading negotiations within the limit of their authority; and representing underwriters in planning discussions and setting expectations for their team to represent Underwriting in partnership with internal and external partners to co-create effective consultative solutions (e.g., case strategy, investment strategy, benefits strategy).
  • Drives and manages case review and preparation by: planning for effective account risk assessment work that uses competitive analyses, broker behavior, network cost profiles, legislative and regulatory impacts, revenue requirements, and contributions; coaching team to make creative use of data and standardized tools to present underwriting and renewal actions and recommendations (e.g., rate drivers, potential risk, glide path, membership impact, projections for future) to clients and/or the organization; maintaining an advanced knowledge of the external business environment and how it applies to the line of business and/or region and coaching their team to do the same; and ensuring teams collaboration with Sales and Account Management to develop case/investment strategies and recommendations with appropriate documentation.
  • Ensures effective engagement with the external market by: enabling team to help highly complex market/customers understand the underwriting approach (e.g., rating methodology, rate drivers, reporting capabilities, and uniqueness from fee for service carriers) and doing so themself; communicating and overseeing complex data needs and requests reactively and proactively, as they arise; enabling team and own ability to build relationships and influence outcomes with customers and channel partners that enable them to understand KPs value; and managing collaboration with account management and sales partners to bring strategic, financial solutions to customers, communicate product capabilities, and explain funding arrangements, and negotiate conditions of offering and pricing within the limits of their authority for complex accounts.
  • Influences and executes goals, initiatives, and program development efforts by: guiding teams to develop and implement innovative new quality and process improvement efforts; guiding team to execute work in support of department initiatives, program goals, and enterprise goals; directly representing Underwriting in cross-functional leadership venues and in the execution of work; supporting the rate setting process for the region/line of business in partnership with internal departments (e.g., Finance, Marketing); supporting Underwriting in the development of the Investment Fund Bank (IFB) allocation in rate setting and managing IFB funds throughout the year; and collaborating with senior management to project staffing needs.
  • Ensures compliance of Underwriting work by: coordinating the peer review process, ensuring incorporation of feedback from peer review of cases, and providing peer review as needed to ensure accuracy and appropriateness of quotes; ensuring their team appropriately obtains and documents case approvals and any policy exceptions and investments; making investment decisions within their authority and escalating to the appropriate level, as needed; maintaining awareness of and compliance with all relevant policies, guidelines, and procedures, applying them to their own work; and ensuring staff read, understand, and follow all policies, guidelines, and procedures, identifying training needs as they arise and influencing the development of policies, guidelines, and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in a leadership role with or without direct reports.
  • Bachelors degree in a related field AND minimum six (6) years of experience in Underwriting, Marketplace Evaluations, Financial Analysis, or a directly related field OR Minimum nine (9) years of experience in Underwriting, Marketplace Evaluations, Financial Analysis, or a directly related field.
