2024 Aflac Global Investments Summer Internship - Portfolio and Data Analytics

Dates: Wednesday, June 5, 2024 through Thursday, August 8, 2024

Worker Designation: Hybrid, minimum of 3 days in the New York City Officer located at 100 Wall Street/corner of Water Street in NYC's Downtown Financial District

About Our Company

Aflac Asset Management, LLC, (d.b.a. Aflac Global Investments) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Aflac Incorporated (Aflac). Aflac Global Investments (GI) located in New York's financial district and is the organization responsible for the overall investment activities of Aflac, Inc. and subsidiaries in Japan, Bermuda, and the U.S. With 150 employees globally, GI seeks investments to maximize long-term returns with a focus on preservation of capital, subject to our asset-liability profile and liquidity and capital requirements. The investment teams support GI's overall goals and objectives by providing market insight and in-depth knowledge of assigned asset classes. GI oversees the strategic deployment of capital for life and supplemental health insurance company balance sheets utilizing both internal teams and external third party asset managers. In 2021, Aflac Inc. became a signatory of the Principles of Responsible Investment (PRI), the global framework for incorporating ESG considerations into investment and ownership decisions. As a PRI signatory, Aflac reinforced their continued commitment to seeking ESG friendly investments into their overall SAA.

Program Overview
  • The summer internship is an intensive 10-week virtual program within the quantitative analytic solutions and trading team, a team responsible for driving portfolio investment recommendations using large data sets to inform their decisions.
  • The Intern will gain valuable experience in market and economic events, using and sourcing large data analysis and synthesizing ideas from data, while also learning about insurance asset management and the industry. This may include investment market analysis; developing desk models capturing various aspects of daily team activities, while understanding how macro-economic and market events shape decision making.
  • The Intern will benefit from exposure to Aflac Global Investments investment wide platform with emphasis on fixed income, understanding quantitative analytic solutions, along with investment risk management, and the execution of investments across our US and Japan operations.
  • The Intern will interact with Senior Management and will present their analytical project(s) to an audience of key stakeholders including other analysts, investment professionals, and Senior Management.

Professional Development

Our summer interns participate in a series of activities that provide the opportunity to learn about all areas of the firm, as well as on-the job training in portfolio analytics and data. The Intern will be assigned projects in support of current business needs including portfolio optimization and efficiency projects, structuring of large data sets in support of portfolio management and understanding how data informs and drives investment decision making. Intern will also learn best practices for research and data analytics and other responsibilities in support of managing the credit portfolio for the full 10 week period.

Job functional responsibilities include:
  • Communicate regularly with all aspects of an insurance asset manager with emphasis on relevant news, regularity of information, interpretation of information, data analytics and the potential risks, while developing methodology for presenting ideas in a thoughtful manner.
  • Learn how to research and correlate investment data and supporting analytics to develop an assessment within defined data sets, industry analysis; along with identifying key trends and movement within financial markets.
  • Assist in optimizing processes and technology, driving automation of portfolio analytics and reporting, and create dashboard using programming (SQL, Python), ensuring data integrity across reporting and analytics. Learn how to identify key trends and changes within the investment market.
  • Create and maintain large data sets, while identifying key trends and statistical information to guide stakeholders in aiding in investment decisions.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of investment analytics pertaining to the assessment and management of the company's investment strategies and risks, including but not limited to stochastic financial projections, understanding tail event stress testing, regulatory capital modeling, portfolio optimization, performance attribution, along with developing asset understanding in foreign exchange and derivatives.
  • Opportunity to significantly contribute to and influence the development of the company's next-generation investment platform.
  • Interact collegially and professionally with other members of the trading and quantitative, strategy, and research groups as well as well as other departments such as Credit, Portfolio, External Management, Enterprise-Wide Risk Management, Accounting, Actuarial, Tax, IT, HR, etc.
  • Participate company /department wide meetings throughout the summer.
  • Written and verbal presentations to assorted stakeholders

We seek highly motivated student pursuing their bachelor's degree in a business/finance or data analytics or STEM degree who is eager and willing to learn and have a strong interest in investments, finance, asset management, economics, insurance, and our company.

Additional qualifications include:
  • GPA of 3.0 or above preferred
  • Degree Focus: Finance, Statistics, Economics, Data or Business Analytics, or similar degree programs.
  • Excellent analytical, quantitative, and problem solving skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership, interpersonal, and relationship management skills
  • Basic understanding of financial statements
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with MS Office, with an emphasis on Excel and PowerPoint
  • All candidates must have eligibility to work permanently in the U.S. and must be physically located in the continental U.S. for the duration of internship. Working time zone is Eastern Standard Time in New York City.
  • Aflac Global Investment is working in a "hybrid work schedule - minimum of 3 days per week" and excited to have in-person learning for the summer of 2024.


The range on this positions is: $28.84/hr and is a non-exempt position. The position requires the individual to work 40 hours per week for ~10 weeks based on the companies hybrid work schedule noted above.

This compensation range is specific to the job level and takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to: education, experience, licensure, certifications, geographic location, and internal equity. The range has been created in good faith based on information known to Aflac at the time of the posting. Compensation decisions are dependent on the circumstances of each case. This salary range does not include any potential incentive pay or benefits, however, such information will be provided separately when appropriate.
