We have an excellent opportunity for an Executive Underwriting Officer to join our insurance business. This position has the opportunity to collaborate across all operations of Markel Insurance Group, including Insurance, Reinsurance, Fronting and ILS. We are seeking an experienced and visionary Executive Underwriting Officer to lead our Property and First Party Lines. This strategic position offers the opportunity to shape the underwriting strategy and vision, driving transformative change and fostering collaboration across the organization. This position reports to the Markel Insurance Group Chief Underwriting Officer.

Position Responsibilities

Operating in an inclusive and collaborative environment, the roles and responsibilities of the Line of Business (LOB) Executive include:

Strategic Leadership:
  • Key member of the Markel Underwriting Group leadership team
  • Define and lead the strategy for Property and First Party Lines in collaboration with key stakeholders.
  • Develop policies, guidelines, and underwriting best practices that span the organization.

Collaboration and Partnership:
  • Support divisional growth and profit initiatives through effective collaboration.
  • Lead affiliated underwriting groups across all divisions, fostering a cohesive and aligned approach.

Data Analytics and Innovation:
  • Collaborate with Claims, Actuarial, and product leaders for results analysis.
  • Explore and initiate opportunities to leverage AI and predictive analytics for enhanced risk analysis.

Risk Management and Reinsurance:
  • Contribute to reinsurance buying strategies.
  • Lead emerging and systemic risk initiatives, ensuring a proactive approach to risk management.


Operational Excellence:
  • Manage gross and net line guidelines.
  • Oversee account referrals above divisional authority, ensuring consistency and excellence.

Strategic Initiatives:
  • Provide executive leadership for the Catastrophe Management team.
  • Support initiatives related to net zero and cross-division opportunities with the Markel Insurance Group.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Requires 15+ years of insurance underwriting and leadership experience with exposure to and understanding of actuarial function
  • Experience with Property Underwriting and First Party Lines
  • Strong relationship building and collaboration skills
  • Excellent strategic skills with proven ability to think long term and lead transformational change
  • Demonstrated experience working with and influencing key stakeholders and leaders
  • This position operates in an enterprise risk management framework at the Markel Insurance Group level. Core responsibilities are established by the Group Risk Management Committee and outlined in the Key Risk Summary for Underwriting.
  • Must be willing to travel up to 50%


Pay information:

The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job relevant education, job relevant experience, training, demonstrated competencies, geographic location and other factors. That national base salary range for this role is $380,000 - $450,000.
