JOB TITLE: Risk Manager

REPORTS TO: VP of People & Culture

LOCATION: Support Center

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

SALARY RANGE: $80,000 - $85,000 DOE

POSITION TYPE: Full-Time

POSITION SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE: The Risk Management Manager will be responsible for creating and executing a strategic plan that fosters workplace safety in restaurants and commissary, improves accountability for management to coach and train employees on safety practices throughout the workday, and ultimately reduce the frequency and cost of workers compensation. Reporting to the VP of Human Resources and working closely with all levels of leadership, the Risk Management Manager will have the resources and support to make an impact. As the Risk Management Manager, you will have one direct report to you, the Risk Management coordinator.

Essential Functions:
  • Analyze worker's compensation trends and identify interventions that improve workplace safety. Working closely with the VP of HR, you'll develop 24-month strategic plan to improve outcomes.
  • Closely manage all claims, develop strong supportive relationships with injured workers, remind them of upcoming appointments, and troubleshoot any problems that may occur in providing appropriate medical care.
  • Liaison between adjuster, treating physicians, nurse case manager and attorney.
  • Negotiate settlement agreement with claimants.
  • Manage "Return to Work" program, making sure everyone understands work tasks that can be performed without aggravating the injured employee's condition. Understand and communicate any/all work restrictions.
  • Manage insurance renewal with broker.
  • Provide actuary projections on a quarterly basis.
  • Manage claims that arise from liability (guests), property and auto claims with carrier and in-house.
  • Manage ADA (American Disability Act) compliance and lawsuits.
  • Assess current safety tactics and safety training by conducting Safety Observations at store locations, determining opportunities for improvement.
  • Develop new equipment, tools and or processes to reduce risk of injury.
  • Establish, maintain, and implement safety training materials, required postings, and Injury Illness Prevention Plan.
  • Conduct regular inspections (Safety Audits) of company stores to assess compliance with safety policies and practices. Provide coaching to both management and team members during visits to improve commitment to workspace safety. Update Safety Audit as needed.
  • Conduct centralized workshops and webinars for store management to improve safety awareness and reduce injury frequency.
  • Remain current on all environmental, health & safety legislation and industry best practices; ensure that company policies and training materials are up-to-date, relevant, and compliant to all laws (federal, state, county, municipal, etc.).
  • Oversee the investigation of all workplace accidents and injuries. Ensure that areas of opportunity have been clearly identified (root cause) and addressed appropriately at all levels (team member, restaurant management, field leadership, and above).
  • Provide company leadership with monthly/quarterly/yearly reports that identify trends and improvements.
  • Complete regular status reports reflecting project status, safety audits, accident investigations, etc.
  • Establish a food safety program for restaurants and commissary and provide required training.
  • Manage COVID-19 prevention program that includes:
  • Employee screening
  • Positive cases
  • Implement local and state regulations
  • Report and monitor store chemical data on CERS (California Environmental Protection Agency)
  • Competencies & Skills:
  • A bachelor's degree in a safety-related discipline, or equivalent level of competency and experience.
  • Minimum 5-years' experience managing worker's compensation related activities, including but not limited to: claims management, investigation, post injury management, return to work/modified duty, trend analysis, etc.
  • Experienced in the development and implementation of safety programs, writing safety training materials, and facilitating workshops.
  • Restaurant knowledge and experience is preferred
  • Any type of safety certification is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy, excellent organizational skills with ability to prioritize, coordinate and simultaneously manage multiple projects and job duties.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, take initiative, and make independent decisions.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain productive relationships at all organizational levels.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Risk Management Coordinator

TRAVEL: Up to 50% in the field and commissary.
