A typical day for the Associate Actuary
  • Anticipate needs and propose solutions to internal and external stakeholders, taking into consideration financial and administrative impacts of the different alternatives, compliance, risk, design and functionalities.
  • Ensure actuarial standards and practices are employed in the development of policy alternatives as they relate to the development of solutions to administrative or pension plan design problems or issues.
  • Create and maintain sustainable high-quality tools, processes and methods that will analyze and help mitigate risks, including the use of data analytics when applicable.
  • Lead projects with minimal oversight, including creating the framework, structure and steps toward a solution for new initiatives.
  • Improve understanding of pension and actuarial concepts of other business areas by explaining the purpose and reason behind the concepts.
  • Collaborate and provide recommendations within Actuarial Services and other business areas in reducing risk and achieving regulatory compliance.
  • Perform independent validations on calculations to identify system and process defects.
  • Liaise with pension plan actuaries to ensure that they receive the data needed for the actuarial valuation.
  • Ensure accurate implementation and certification of website estimators following plan modifications and/or change in assumptions.
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide service to external agencies that occasionally require actuarial support.
  • Stay up to date with respect to actuarial standards, legislation and pension plan rules to mitigate risks.

What you bring
  • Associate of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (ACIA) designation.
  • University degree with an actuarial background and a minimum of 10 years of defined benefit pension-related experience.
  • Expert knowledge of highly technical areas of defined benefit pension plans, including legislation, administration, risk and actuarial practice.
  • Exceptional project management skills with the ability to develop a new framework for a project without having a reference structure.
  • Superior analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills, including verbal, written, interpersonal and presentation.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team setting or independently, as needed.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and working knowledge of other Microsoft Office applications, including Word and PowerPoint.
  • Working knowledge of data analytics is an asset.
