Position Summary

The Department of Mathematics and Statistical Science at the University of Idaho is seeking to appoint a full-time instructor in mathematics education and introductory mathematics. Teaching responsibilities will include teaching courses in mathematics education and introductory mathematics (i.e., algebra, trigonometry, and/or pre-calculus). The instructor will collaborate with faculty in mathematics education and with introductory mathematics faculty, staff, and the Director of Introductory Mathematics. There may also be opportunities for collaborative work with the mathematics education group at UI in research and assessment. The instructor will also be expected to participate in department meetings and serve on department, college, and/or university committees.

Unit/Department Summary

The Department of Mathematics and Statistical Science is housed within the College of Science at the University of Idaho, located just nine miles from Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. The department is responsible for an extensive mathematics curriculum that provides general education requirements for undergraduates as well as the requirements for a variety of majors and minors across the university. It is home to the Polya Mathematics Learning Center, which has historically used an emporium model of mathematics instruction and is responsible for instruction in introductory precalculus mathematics. The center is run by a collaborative team of instructors, support staff, and tutors. The department of Mathematics and Statistical Science also offers undergraduate degrees in mathematics with several focus options (general, applied: computation, applied: modeling and data science, or applied: mathematical biology) and statistics with two focus options (general or actuarial science and finance). Several graduate degrees are also offered including a MAT degree in mathematics, MS degrees in mathematics and statistics, and a PhD in mathematics; BCB MS and PhD degrees are also available to students working with faculty affiliated with that program. The department maintains research strengths in the core areas of pure mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematical biology, mathematical education, and applied and theoretical statistics. Many of the faculty in the department are affiliated with interdisciplinary groups across campus including the Institute for Modeling Collaboration and Innovation (IMCI), the Institute for Interdisciplinary Data Sciences (IIDS), and the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (BCB) program.
