The vacancy

Role Purpose

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an ambitious actuary with strong technical and consultancy skills to join the Insurance Consulting team at a senior level and play a leading role in expanding the scope and capability of the Life Consulting team's proposition.

The successful candidate will engage in client relationships from day one and will play a key role in growing the business through the acquisition of new clients. You will benefit from very supportive and inclusive relationships across the team.

The role will include a wide variety of actuarial assignments across the OAC business within the life market-place. This is a client-facing role and will require some business development time or pre-sales work. The role can be home or office based and will likely involve some UK travel.

This job description sets out the scope of a Chief Actuary at OAC, together with the main duties of the post. It does not include or define all tasks which the post holder may be expected to carry out. Duties may vary from time to time without changing the nature of the post or the level of responsibility. The post holder may also be required to carry out any other duties as required and which might be suitable.

Key Accountabilities

Responsibilities of the actuarial work covered by the Chief Actuary will include (but is not limited to):
  • Overseeing data validation practices
  • Reviewing experience analyses and determining suitable methods and assumptions
  • Completing Solvency II calculations and modelling
  • Reviewing regulatory annual and quarterly returns
  • Managing the audit review and enquiries
  • Supporting clients with their stress and scenario testing
  • Assisting clients with their business planning and strategic direction
  • Attending client, Board and committee meetings
  • Directing pricing work as required
  • Assessing client investments and liaise with asset managers
  • Providing support to fellow Chief Actuaries, and support with external clients
  • Providing Peer Review for valuation and Solvency ll work for external clients
  • Providing support for ad-hoc actuarial work across business areas
  • Providing input and support for tenders and client presentations as appropriate

Technical Knowledge and Professional Qualifications
  • Holds a Chief Actuary (Life) practising certificate.
  • Strong technical skills with the ability to perform well both at a management level (ie directing and overseeing the work of a team) and also from time to time 'on the ground' ie able to develop and update actuarial models/calculations as required.
