Description

About Us

Faraday is part of the General Re Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway. In this respect we have a uniquely solid and stable financial capability.

Faraday's Syndicate 435 at Lloyd's underwrites Aviation, Casualty (North American Specialist Lines, Financial Lines, International Casualty and UK Liability Insurance), Property (Direct & Facultative and Treaty), Accident & Health, Agriculture and Energy.

Ten distinct teams underwrite a diverse range of risks worldwide both on an insurance and reinsurance basis, developing close and mutually supportive relationships with clients and brokers in our chosen markets. Our customers are at the heart of everything we do.

Main purpose of the role

As a Senior Actuarial Analyst you will contribute to all aspects of actuarial work to support the Aviation and Energy teams at Faraday. The expectation is for the role to evolve into a technical, pricing-focused role with a wide brief across all lines of business in the future depending on your preferences and skillset.

Context of the role

The Faraday actuarial department is structured into "line of business teams" that align with the underwriting teams and "core function" teams for pricing, reserving and capital modelling. You will join in a line of business role with a focus on Aviation and Energy risks to gain first-hand experience of Faraday's business and processes. The development path is towards a highly technical role in the core pricing team.

Key Responsibilities

The line of business role is a mixed role that will give you a broad range of responsibilities across pricing, capital and reserving for the Aviation and Energy lines of business. The responsibilities of the role include:
• Pricing and monitoring of individual risks.
• Performing market reviews to parameterise the pricing models.
• Being responsible for the reserving of relevant classes.
• Supporting the business planning process and parameterisation of the capital model.
• Continually improving the efficiency, accuracy and transparency of existing business processes via automation and the application of project management best practices.
• Preparing and communicating results to underwriters and senior management.

This will provide the foundation for a technical pricing role in the future, where the key responsibilities will be to lead the pricing of complex and bespoke deals; review and develop Faraday's pricing bases across all lines and build the tools that underwriters use to price individual risks.

Key Relationships

The role will involve working closely with colleagues from across the company, especially:
• Members of the actuarial team, in particular the core function teams of pricing, reserving and capital.
• Members of the relevant underwriting and claims teams.
• Members of the catastrophe modelling team.

Qualifications & Experience

This role will suit a part qualified actuary with up to three years of experience and an excellent academic background. Experience working in general insurance pricing is desirable but not essential, however you should be particularly interested in the technical aspects of actuarial work (e.g. research and development, data analysis, statistics and programming). You should be hardworking and conscientious with the ability to drive tasks forward and find solutions to complex problems. You should have an open, friendly and professional attitude and be self-motivated to learn and develop quickly in the role. In addition, the following qualifications and attributes are desirable:
• A 2:1 degree or higher in a numerate/mathematical subject.
• Excellent IT skills. Particularly in Microsoft Excel and ideally with experience of using VBA, R and SQL. Knowledge of C# is also an advantage.
• Ability to review, analyse and present technical information concisely and effectively.
• Good communication skills with the ability to work effectively with people from all areas of the business.
• Ability to work independently and deliver to deadlines.
