Job Opportunity:

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Underwriter to join our team in Chicago, IL. Qualified candidates will have previous experience in environmental underwriting or have environmental consulting, engineering or regulatory experience with an understanding of Federal/State environmental law.

The Underwriter position is responsible for managing an existing renewal book of business as well as developing and expanding new business opportunities through production & marketing calls with brokers and clients, prequalifying new business opportunities and utilizing underwriting acumen to select sound Environmental risks.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Maintain and develop the Environmental book of business which mainly consists of Contractors Pollution Liability (CPL) and Pollution Legal Liability (PLL) business.
  • Establish, develop, and expand broker and customer relationships across respective territories.
  • Work closely with loss control, actuary, claims and legal teams to evaluate risk and provide solutions to customers.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task, and make quick decisions while maintaining underwriting integrity.
  • Travel as required to achieve business goals.


Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • 1 - 5 years environmental underwriting experience; or
  • 3-8 year of environmental consulting, environmental engineering or regulatory or similar experience
  • Working knowledge of Federal/State environmental law.
  • Familiarity with Phase 1 and Phase 2 environmental reports.
  • Ability to work within a team environment.
  • Proven marketing and communication skills.
  • BS/BA Degree or equivalent experience.
