Commonwealth Care Alliance (CCA) is thrilled once again to host its Summer Internship Program for clinical and non-clinical departments!The Internship Program is open to undergraduate and graduate students from across the country. CCA Internships are a valuable way for students to obtain real-world experience, gain exposure to a specific field, build their network for the future, and support our members and communities. This program is a great way for CCA to attract and develop exceptional talent as we continue to grow.

The Actuarial Services function resides within the Actuarial Services Medical Economics department. Actuarial Services Medical Economics works closely with Business Intelligence, Data Science, Clinical Informatics, Financial Planning Analysis, and Accounting. The intern working in the Actuarial Services Department will gain hands-on experience in the core functions of a health plan's actuarial department, including data validation, incurred-but-not-reported (IBNR) development, and Medicare Part C/D revenue accrual calculations.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Using Microsoft excel and the application of the intern's choice (among SAS, SQL, Python, or R), the intern will develop an algorithm that aids in the department's core functions. The project for the intern will be decided in the first two weeks of the internship in consultation with the intern's manager.
  • Assist with the department's regular monthly close processes (g. IBNR reserving, premium revenue forecasting, risk adjustment, etc.).
  • Perform data quality and validation checks.
  • Design, maintain and update Microsoft Excel workbooks
  • Interpret SAS and SQL code.
  • Develop a SAS, SQL, Python, or R program that answers an actuarially-relevant question.
  • Communicate technical information to a broad audience


Additional Information

  • All internships will be paid standard and competitive rates for undergraduate and graduate levels ($23 and $25 per hour respectively). Internships are expected to be full-time through the duration of the program.


What We're Looking For

Required:

  • Undergraduate student currently enrolled or a recent graduate within the last 2 years


OR

  • Graduate student currently enrolled or a recent graduate within the last 2 years
  • An ability and willingness to quickly learn new concepts and skills in a largely self-directed manner.
  • An interest in the actuarial profession, managed health care, and/or data analytics.
  • An ability to interpret, analyze, and quality check data.


Desired:

  • One or more actuarial exams completed
  • Prior health care or actuarial knowledge is not required. Prior coding experience is desired but not required; an ability to think programmatically and an eagerness to learn are sufficient.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Experience programming in a statistical/data language, such as SAS, Python, R, or SQL.
