Description

The Underwriting Operations Manager role is to support the Chief Operations Officer by leading and managing the core operational teams for underwriting operations and credit control. As part of the business operations team this role works collaboratively with leaders and managers of Underwriting, Human Resources, Facilities and IT.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • 8 - 10 years of reinsurance industry experience in a similar role.
  • Proven experience with (re)insurance systems, processes and controls to support the underwriting business functions.
  • Completed, or significant progression towards, a relevant professional designation.
  • Professional accounting designation would be an asset.
  • Familiarity with Bermuda, Lloyd's and U.S. insurance/reinsurance markets and business models.


Experience/skills:
  • Proven ability to manage a portfolio of projects and business as usual activity.
  • Demonstrable focus on excellence, particularly with regards to data quality and use.
  • Strong communicator, respected by own team, other members of management, and externally.
  • Proficient in use of data analytics tools and MI dashboards.
  • Systems implementation experience.
  • Advanced skills across all Microsoft Office applications and proficiency in performing accurate mathematical calculations.
  • Collaborative team player who engages effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills, including project management skills, allowing you to lead initiatives with confidence and drive successful outcomes.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to delivering excellence in your work.


Duties:
  • Oversee the underwriting operations team, providing coaching, training and performance management.
  • Enhance and own processes and controls and ensure consistent application of agreed protocols including in relation to underwriting data and related hand-off to finance. Ensuring data quality for formal outputs of underwriting data provided to finance - timely, complete and accurate.
  • Analyse premium, BDX and claims experience data, tracking trends to ensure underwriting policies and procedures adhere to company standards.
  • Provide effective challenge to underwriters to enable underwriting operations team members to work efficiently and effectively.
  • Monitoring of underwriting authorities to ensure authorities are maintained and adhered to in all policies bound, ensuring business compliance within agreed underwriting frameworks.
  • Collaborate with actuarial pricing and cat modelling teams to ensure cohesive approach to data connectivity.
  • Oversee premium bordereau processing and be systems owner for all underwriting operations support systems.
  • Working collaboratively with the Claims and business information teams to ensure accurate and timely access to data for management reporting.
  • Maintain oversight of credit control and data quality through team interactions and standard reports.
  • Ensure timely collection of funds and processing of premiums, bordereaux, and reinstatement premiums.
  • Facilitate the timely identification and management of issues.
  • Report on status of top counterparties to the Underwriting Oversight Committee and the Executive Committee as appropriate.
  • Contribute effectively to the Company's systems and technology strategy and commitment to data quality.
  • Manage underwriting operations team interactions with external and internal auditors as applicable.
  • Establish and maintain external relationships with applicable individuals at brokers, cedents, advisors and industry associations as appropriate to role.
  • Produce reports and briefings for consumption by internal committees and the Board.
  • Working to strict deadlines with regular communication within the team and managing teams' expectations.
  • Embrace additional duties and lead ad-hoc projects, demonstrating flexibility and willingness to contribute to the Company's success.
