Description

The Hartford's International Actuarial team is a team of strategic business partners responsible for delivering expert consultation via pricing and other analytical tools, financial/reserving analysis, and capital modelling advice. This includes carrying out pricing and segmentation analysis across Syndicate 1221 and additional entities. Our team's mission is to enable profitable growth through proactive analytical insights and solutions.

This position reports to the International Pricing Lead Actuary and has an important impact on the Company's success, working in close partnership with our leadership in Underwriting and Claims, as well as thought partners on The Hartford's U.S. Actuarial team. This individual will deliver pricing enhancements and technical analysis, working with the Pricing Lead and Business Actuaries to enhance underwriting decision-making. This individual should have strong technical and analytical skills and be able to communicate effectively across technical and non-technical audiences and be able to influence business partners.

Job Responsibilities

This individual will perform a variety of actuarial functions, including pricing model enhancements and development, profitability studies and monitoring of key actuarial leading indicators to influence leadership in setting business strategy. This will include preparing analytical tools and working closely with the business actuaries in pricing and portfolio management analysis. The role covers all International classes across Financial Lines, Marine & Energy, Casualty and Political Risks.

Pricing
  • Develop, enhance and maintain actuarial pricing tools used by the underwriting teams across multiple lines of business.
  • Perform insightful account-specific analyses that enable the business to price new and renewal policies. This will require the actuary to challenge the status quo and think creatively as well as to communicate complex concepts to business partners.
  • Support ongoing migration of pricing models into a contemporary internal pricing platform, focusing on efficient delivery and the ability to leverage enhanced data capture to inform pricing decisions.
  • Partner with actuarial and other colleagues from The Hartford to share pricing best practices and insights.
  • Partner with the Data & Analytics team to enhance the availability, accuracy, frequency, and insight from key performance indicators in management information dashboards. Identify trends and insights from these tools to inform underwriting decision-making.
  • Develop and use business planning templates to aid Plan for prospective year.


Portfolio Management
  • Support the Pricing Lead in developing and rolling out the segmentation and portfolio management roadmap.
  • Identify and analyse critical pricing and profitability benchmarks to support portfolio management activities, including internal pricing results and competitor/market information when available.
  • Partner with Data & Analytics to develop and enhance monitoring process and assist underwriters in using segmentation dashboards to influence profit driving decision making.
  • Partner with actuarial and other colleagues from The Hartford to share segmentation and portfolio management best practices and insights.


General
  • Monitor and influence data quality-initiate and participate in the development of procedures to improve data quality. Investigate how data resources both internal and external to the company can be leveraged to bring insight to the business.
  • Develop partnership with Actuarial, Underwriting, Data Science, Data & Analytics, Claims, Finance, Operations, I.T., U.S. Actuarial, and other areas of the International business segment.


Experience & Skills
  • Part-qualified in IFoA (or equivalent experience)
  • Relevant general insurance actuarial experience
  • London (Lloyd's) market experience is preferred, but not required
  • Knowledge of actuarial pricing techniques
  • Must be able to demonstrate analytical skills and offer creative solutions to business questions; exhibit a process efficiency/improvement mindset
  • Strong verbal/written communication skills; must be able to effectively communicate complex technical concepts in understandable terms to business partners.
  • Ability to develop strong working relationships and the ability to interact with and influence our business partners
  • Strong project management and teamwork skills; flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Demonstrates ability to deliver on multiple projects and analyses concurrently.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages (particularly Excel)
  • Familiarity with databases and SQL, R, Python or equivalent programmes is a plus
