The Team You Will Join

The Market Risk team at MetLife is part of the Investments Risk and Stress Testing unit in Global Risk Management (GRM). The Market Risk team is primarily responsible for Asset Liability Management (ALM) governance, monitoring of market, liquidity, and derivative counterparty risks against limits, maintaining the Risk Neutral Economic Scenario Generator. The Market Risk Strategy team focuses on ALM strategies and playbooks, development of liability replicating portfolios, and development and maintenance of certain hedge strategies, and other ad-hoc or special initiatives, all of which it develops in conjunction with many stakeholders throughout GRM, Actuarial, ALM, Investments and Finance.

The Opportunity

The Assistant Vice President & Actuary - Market Risk will report to the Vice President, Head of Market Risk Strategy and support the Market Risk team within the Global Risk Management organization. The primary responsibility for this role will be to provide analytic support in assessing market, liquidity, and solvency risk for key strategic initiatives including reinsurance, buyouts, new products, etc., both internal or external, and any implications to risk management strategies that may occur or be required as a result of an initiative. This position will also assist in evaluating potential trust investment guidelines and their impact on collateral sufficiency and measuring and monitoring counterparty risk after execution. Being a member of the market risk strategy group, this individual may also provide support for other ALM or hedging strategic initiatives.

How You'll Help Us Build a Confident Future:
  • Collaborate with CROs and other Risk, Actuarial, Investment, and Business partners to develop a clear understanding of all relevant elements and considerations for each initiative, including contractual obligations, trust mechanics, contingency events, risk protections, reporting and monitoring
  • Build models to assess impact of strategic initiatives on future ALM, market, liquidity, and solvency risk
  • Assess impact of different investment guideline choices on potential collateral sufficiency in adverse environments
  • Evaluate hedging or impact of other strategies to mitigate any identified risks
  • Monitor counterparty risks post execution in collaboration with other Risk and Financial partners
  • Communicate implications of different designs and choices on risk and value
  • Help to update existing, or create new, policies, guidelines, or strategies as needed


What You Need to Succeed (Required Qualifications):
  • Bachelor's degree in mathematics, statistics, actuarial science, finance, or similar field of study
  • Actuarial designation (ASA or FSA)
  • 5+ years Risk Management or ALM experience
  • Excellent Excel financial asset and liability modelling skills
  • Strong understanding of risk and ALM practices
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously


What Will Give You an Edge (Additional Skills)
  • Knowledge of GAAP and Statutory accounting for insurers
  • Understanding of credit risk
  • Experience with programming languages (VBA, R, C++ or Python)


Salary Range: The wage range for applicants for this position is between $157,800 and $210,400.
