The opportunity

As a Senior Catastrophe Modelling Research Lead, you will play a crucial role in enhancing our organization's understanding and management of risks associated with natural disasters. In this role you will manage QBE's catastrophe model validation pipeline and add value to QBE's View of Risk by bringing innovative insight through additional data sources.

Your new role

In this role you will:
  • Manage QBE's catastrophe model evaluation pipeline to maintain QBE's View of Risk with priorities and timelines agreed with the Group Head of Catastrophe Modelling Research and other Group and Divisional stakeholders
  • Project manage and perform individual catastrophe model evaluations in accordance with the catastrophe model validation best practice in agreed timeframes
  • Manage catastrophe modelling requirements with GSSC team including quality and timeliness
  • Maintain and improve catastrophe model validation best practice
  • Add insight and value to QBE's model evaluations through leading projects on innovative use of claims data and sourcing of relevant hazard, vulnerability and loss data
  • Work with a range of internal and external stakeholders to add value to QBE's View of Risk , including Divisional teams, model vendors, brokers, academics and consultants
  • Adhere to Group Risk and other regulatory requirements and capacity to work with these stakeholders to codevelop appropriate solutions.


Please note that for the successful candidate, this process will include a phone screen with our Talent Acquisition team, 2/3 interviews (either face to face or online via Teams) and background checks.

About you
  • Demonstrable experience in a similar role alongside a PhD, Master's or Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Physical Geography, Meteorology, Flood Engineering or Atmospheric Sciences.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Team management and training skills including experience/comfort in managing offshore resources
  • Extensive technical skills in catastrophe modelling software such as RMS, Verisk and Impact Forecasting Elements
  • Recognised subject matter expertise and deep interest in natural hazards including cyclones, floods, bushfire, earthquake and storms, catastrophe risk, re/insurance.
