What you'll be doing

Under the guidance of the Chief Investment Officer (CIO), the Executive Director will be responsible for designing, implementing, and managing the investment strategy and portfolio construction process for the CIBC Pension Plan (Plan). The Plan has $10B of gross assets under management that are allocated to a combination of a liability matching portfolio to mitigate and contain risk within manageable limits, and a growth portfolio to generate sustainable superior risk-adjusted investment over the long term. The role will be accountable for leading total Plan, management and portfolio analytics, assessing investment and liquidity risk at both the total portfolio and asset class levels, understanding and quantifying pension liability risks, monitoring overall Plan leverage, and ensuring adequate high-quality liquid asset (HQLA) are available for collateral management.

How you'll succeed
  • Leadership and oversight- Lead and oversee the Plan's investment strategy to achieve long term goals and contain risks within manageable limits, under the direction of the CIO. Assume delegated authorities related to total plan management, ensure the successful implementation of strategy through the presentation and approval of investment policies and supporting governance activities
  • Strategy & Portfolio Construction- Provide a holistic lens across the total Plan to develop and recommend asset mix allocations to the CIO that provide engineered outcomes based on competing objectives and constraints (return, risk, liquidity, and cash needs)Lead strategic ALM studies with a combination of quantitative modeling, scenario analysis and qualitative assessment; also provide the CIO with ad-hoc analysis on potential asset mix changes and tactical tilts
  • Total Plan & Investment Risk- Measure the overall risk of the pension plan to the bank's balance sheet resources, so that it can be managed to sustainably earn and retain a surplus reserve that exceeds the at-risk amountMonitor overall plan leverage, ensure adequate high-quality liquid asset (HQLA) are available for collateral management and work collaboratively with Risk Management on scenario and stress testing at the pension plan and enterprise level
  • Analytics- Direct the employment of data methods, visualization and analytics to develop dashboards that identify and monitor key risk indicators, and support the CIOs strategic and tactical investment decision making. Oversee end-to-end performance monitoring and drive enhancements around risk attribution


Who you are
  • You have demonstrated experience. Minimum of 10-15 years of experience within a large pension plan, asset manager, or investment consultancy. Undergraduate degree in business or actuarial finance, finance, accounting or the equivalent combination of education and experience. CFA, actuarial, or other relevant designation
  • You are confident in your knowledge. Expert knowledge of capital markets and public asset classes including liquid alternatives. Comprehensive understanding of pension plan and/or institutional investing
  • You have well developed stakeholder management. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Good organizational and time management skills to deal effectively with multiple time demands in very tight timelines.
