The Manager/Director, Claims Operations is a strategic thinker who understands the big picture and is capable of articulating organizational goals and objectives; accountable and empowered to take necessary actions to further the initiatives of the Markel enterprise. The Manager/Director, Claims Operations is responsible for oversight of Claim Operations Supervisors, Lead Claims Technicians, Claims Analysts, and Claim Technicians; performance management and salary management of direct reports. The Manager is a coach and mentor; provides technical input to Claim Operations associates, as necessary. The Manager/Director, Claims Operations is a critical thinker, engages in independent analysis, and may make recommendations to the Senior Director, Claims WC on systems and workflow. The Outcome Statements will be measured through Senior Director observations, external and internal feedback, and Audits.

  • Assess and evaluate individual performer and team performance, provide feedback and develop training needs. Assess and evaluate individual examiner and team performance, provide feedback and develop training needs
  • Assist in preparation of budgets, evaluation of expenses and assess resource needs
  • Direct and monitor assignments of new loss activity
  • Ensure that team adheres to Fair Claims Practices regulations and internal Claims Quality Performance Objectives
  • Foster and encourage strong relationships with internal stakeholders (UW, PL, Actuarial)
  • Make recommendations concerning reserve changes to director or senior management.
  • Participate in review and discussion of large loss activity with interested stakeholders (UW, PL, Actuarial, Executive Management)
  • Participate in special projects as requested
  • Prepare and distribute reports by collecting and summarizing information
  • Promote and enhance strong relationships with customers and channel partners
  • Review and approve correspondence and reports
  • Review and approve reserves and settlements in excess of examiner's authority
  • Travel to other claim offices, mediations, trials, and conferences as required
  • Work with CVMO on contract negotiations.

Education
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
  • JD, advanced degree, or focused technical degree a plus

Certification
  • CPCU or successful achievement of other industry designations
  • I-Lead or other Management Training

Work Experience
  • Minimum of 15 years of claims handling and management experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Successful completion of 5 years as a Manager

  • Superior claims technical skills and a strong understanding for product lines being directed
  • Ability to manage teams of seasoned managers and examiners responsible for handling a variety of claims
