Job Description

Position Summary

Sompo is seeking a Vice President, Middle Market Property Underwriting Technical Manager. This position will be located in the Sompo New York City office.

The Middle Market Property Underwriting Technical Manager will report to the Vice President, Head of Technical Managers in the US. This role will have an opportunity to shape the underwriting strategy and vision, driving transformative change and fostering collaboration across the organization for the property line. Further, this position will handle referrals for Property line of business, develop underwriting guidelines, participate in special projects and provide subject matter expertise for the business.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Underwriting and Product knowledge of the Commercial Property Industry
  • Provide product knowledge to Underwriting, Operations, IT, and other functional areas across the organization as needed
  • Handle complex queries and referrals within delegated authority
  • Contribute to reinsurance buying strategies
  • Lead emerging and systemic risk initiatives, ensuring a proactive approach to risk management
  • Support the Underwriting team to execute business strategy to include pricing, rate adequacy, terms, and conditions
  • Provide input. supporting the development of strategic business planning activities that align with Underwriting philosophy and practices
  • Identify and lead technical training initiatives and projects
  • Ensure Underwriting Initiatives and Strategies support overall growth, profitability, and retention of business
  • Educate and reinforce Underwriting strategy and guidelines to applicable team/s
  • Subject Matter Expert and support for Underwriting team/s
  • Provide Underwriting insight related to Underwriting tools
  • Establish exposure identification, risk assessment, risk response, controls and monitoring of the standard LoB
  • Participate in pre-renewal, pipeline, and new business pre-qualification meetings
  • Participate and provide feedback for CAT modelling and Actuarial models
  • Work with Regulatory Compliance to establish strategies and guidance
  • Work collaboratively with Underwriters and Legal when drafting manuscript endorsements
  • Partner with the Actuarial team to review insurance products that support profitability, competitive pricing, and legal compliance
  • Recommend product changes in response to consumer needs and marketplace trends
  • Review and implement legislative, regulatory, and other mandated changes
  • Provide product knowledge to functional areas
  • Subject Matter Expert related to special projects and new processing system initiatives
  • Consult & coordinate with Underwriting, Actuarial, IT and Customer Service to elicit decision making
  • Identify process/service improvement opportunities on a continuous basis
  • Communicate industry trends related to coverage, guidelines, and legal issues with Underwriting team/s
  • Collaborate with various functional areas across the organization to include Legal, Underwriting, Claims, Actuarial, Audit and Regulatory Compliance


Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 10 years of in the Commercial P&C Industry
  • Extensive Property knowledge and understanding of the industry
  • Excellent analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to make decisions with limited information and see issues through to resolution
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences that include all levels of management
  • Experience advising and collaborating with Executive and Senior leadership
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team
  • Strong commitment to providing superior client service
  • Must be willing to travel up to 30%


Salary Range: $160,000 - $240,000 Actual compensation for this role will depend on several factors including the cost of living associated with your work location, your qualifications, skills, competencies, and relevant experience.
