This opportunity is in the Actuarial Services Department.

Our Actuarial department is a dynamic group of professionals focusing on pricing, reserving, and data analysis for all written lines of business. The actuarial team creates, maintains and updates pricing models for underwriters to utilize; creates reserving estimates for all lines of business and assists with financial- and claims-related items, helping the organization to succeed using our insurance and modeling expertise. We aim to improve practices and efficiency across the organization, while using data to the fullest potential to gain insights that help our underwriting and management teams meet our goals.

Role Description:

In the role of Actuary - Reserving, you will be part of a team responsible for building and maintaining reserving models. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work closely with your colleagues in Actuarial Services as well as our Insurance Underwriting, IT, Finance, and Claims departments. By applying your skills in programming and statistics along with your knowledge of actuarial methods to create models that accurately forecast the reserves that Safety National needs to set aside for future claims, you will make a significant impact to the long-term stability of the company.

Your primary responsibilities as an Actuary - Reserving will include providing model support and analysis of your assigned line(s) of business. You may be assigned any number of our 17 products to reserve and support. You will maintain and enhance actuarial databases, file repositories, computer models/templates, and reports to meet the needs of the department, management, and our external stakeholders. Additional responsibilities required of you include creating and maintaining documentation in accordance with company policy, regulatory requirements, and actuarial standards of practice. You will work closely with staff and other departments' managers to respond to corporate initiatives, market developments, regulatory changes, and corporate goals.

The ideal candidate is an Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society (ACAS) and is pursuing Fellowship. This role requires strong detail orientation and organization skills. Professional experience in commercial Property and Casualty lines is preferred. Finally, SQL and intermediate Microsoft Excel skills including VBA is required.

Education:

  • A four-year Bachelor's degree is required


Required Qualifications:

  • 5 or more years of years of experience in commercial lines pricing or reserving at a U.S. insurance or reinsurance company
  • Associate or Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (ACAS or FCAS)
  • Advanced Excel knowledge including VBA programming, macros and writing moderately complex formulas
  • A keen attention to detail
  • Prior professional experience with SQL including writing new queries
  • Strong professional communication skills


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional CAS exams beyond ACAS, in pursuit of FCAS
  • Experience with Snowflake
  • Programming experience in Python, SAS, R or other languages

Compensation for the successful candidate will consider the candidate's particular combination of knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience.
