About the Position

Reporting directly to the SVP, Head of US Casualty Insurance, the AVP, Underwriter, will analyze, underwrite, model, and service Casualty insurance products including, but not limited to, Professional, Management and General Liability. The successful candidate will play an active role in developing and growing a diversified casualty insurance portfolio, which has been identified as a key strategic focus for the company. The AVP will have broad responsibility for individual Casualty Insurance delegated deals, from marketing and negotiating to underwriting, structuring, and reporting. Candidates should have some casualty underwriting experience in program, reinsurance or direct underwriting and demonstrate the ability to establish effective working relationships with brokers and clients.

We offer a highly collaborative environment and the opportunity to work closely with multiple internal business and functional partners, from actuarial and claims, to delegated underwriting and casualty reinsurance teams. This role will join a dynamic team focused on building a profitable portfolio that meets the broader Casualty Insurance growth aspirations. The AVP, Casualty Insurance Underwriter, role is based in our midtown New York office and will be expected to travel primarily within the continental United States and to London.

Key Responsibilities

Casualty Insurance underwriting
  • Underwrite a portfolio of casualty insurance business in alignment with our risk and return goals
  • Monitor and manage individual MGA relationships to meet profitability targets and performance metrics
  • Underwrite individual submissions and conduct due diligence on products, business plan, historical performance, operations, deal structure, and management teams
  • Build and maintain client relationships, monitoring performance and communicating RenaissanceRe's underwriting requirements and portfolio vision to MGAs and brokers
  • Develop collaborative relationships with US and London brokers to cultivate opportunities for new, renewed, or expanded business
  • Establish working knowledge of the Lloyds market structure

Internal partnerships
  • Collaborate with business and functional team members in an integrated global casualty organization to reinforce a consistent view of risk and provide seamless support to clients
  • Collaborate with the actuarial team to analyze and construct portfolio structures to provide optimal solutions for our clients while managing our risk appropriately
  • Actively engage with the proprietary models and tools supporting the casualty insurance business, contributing to continuous improvement and enhanced decision-making in portfolio selection, pricing and underwriting
  • Support senior team members on existing deals within the portfolio

Industry expertise
  • Engage actively with industry developments and serve as an internal resource to inform on casualty insurance market trends
  • Report on assigned lines of business portfolio
  • Conduct client audits, attend client meetings, industry conferences and market events
  • Continue to expand knowledge of casualty market and underwriting skills in casualty lines


Candidate Qualifications
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in insurance underwriting, ideally in casualty lines in a program, reinsurance, or direct environment
  • An understanding of portfolio management related to program underwriting
  • Innovative solutions-orientation, informed by strong analytical and decision-making skills
  • Knowledge of global insurance and/or reinsurance markets, including products, distribution, competitors, contract or treaty structures, regulatory trends, external events, etc.
  • Ability to work effectively with actuarial peers, understand actuarial concepts, and interpret model results
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong relationships internally with team members and externally with clients and brokers
  • Learning agility, comfort with fluidity, and change management skills to react positively and operate successfully in high growth and evolving environments
  • Undergraduate degree

The full-time base salary range for this position is $140,000-$160,000 per year; base salary offered may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The position is eligible for bonus and a comprehensive benefits package. This information is provided per the New York City Human Rights Law and applies only to positions in New York City.
