Description

UFG is looking for an action-oriented actuarial leader with strong business acumen to enhance our pricing team capabilities. The individual in this role will develop and lead a team that is fully engaged with the business to recognize UFG's unique product and customer exposures. The Actuarial Pricing Manager focuses on delivering deeply analyzed pricing and underwriting recommendations and insights to better inform management's understanding of portfolio profitability. This role will include developing and maintaining strong relationships with the Construction Business Unit Underwriting team, as well as Finance, Claims, and Reserving Actuarial partners to ensure guidance reflects a thorough understanding of the business and meets the organization's needs. This position will also lead profitability reviews and initiatives for the commercial auto, general liability, and inland marine lines of business.

Responsibilities:

  • Partner with Underwriting leadership to identify key drivers of profitability and assist in developing and monitoring strategies to optimize financial performance for assigned business unit and line of business portfolios.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of assigned business unit and line of business portfolios, including an understanding of the insurance exposures, underwriting and agency management processes, pricing elements and regulatory requirements.
  • Build, support, and maintain models for actuarial profitability analyses that provide actionable insights and a deep understanding of the drivers of results.
  • Lead assigned indication and planning efforts related to loss ratio estimates and support the development and execution of underwriting strategies to drive profitable growth.
  • Effectively manage a team of analysts, prioritizing employee development and providing accountability and resources for employees to achieve organizational goals.
  • Manage preparation of rate and actuarial memorandums to support rate filings and respond to objections and regulatory requests.
  • Communicate information and results to a variety of technical and non-technical audiences across the organization in a clear and concise manner.
  • Develop and monitor processes to measure pricing adequacy across assigned business units and lines of business.
  • Collaborate with Underwriting, Finance, Claims, and Reserving Actuarial to maintain a deep understanding of portfolio exposure, emerging trends, and internal requirements for consideration in pricing indications.
  • Make informed actuarial recommendations based on professional judgment and experience; effectively challenge and/or escalate issues that present risk to the results of the organization.
  • Support ad hoc quantitative analysis that provides insightful and actionable guidance.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accuracy, consistency, efficiency, and compliance with internal standards.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • FCAS designation from the Casualty Actuarial Society preferred, ACAS required.
  • BS in Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Statistics, Economics, or related field.


Experience:

  • 8+ years of actuarial experience
  • 5+ years prior actuarial pricing work in commercial P&C
  • 3+ years managing actuarial staff


Knowledge, skills & abilities:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate technical analyses to a non-technical audience.
  • Proven ability to develop and manage effective teams.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, apply independent judgment and well-developed critical thinking skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of actuarial techniques and standards
  • Able to manage and coordinate multiple projects and prioritize team resources.
  • Knowledge of commercial insurance products and general insurance/business knowledge.
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Excel, Power Point, Word and ability to develop proficiency with internal systems and reporting tools.
  • Experience with SQL required, with R preferred.


Working Conditions:
